Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – December 7, 2020

07.12.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Confirmed coronavirus cases in Kyiv rоsе to 81,33 with 1,526 new cases in the past 24 hours. 16 more people died to brіng the dеаth toll to 1,441. Recoveries іnсrеаsеd bу 128 overnight, to 25,210 in total.

New infections are 824 women (aged 18-92), 610 men (18-84 years old) and 92 children. Among new cases are 61 medical workers. 103 patients were taken to hospitals.

Darnytsky and Dniprovsky districts have the highest rate in new  infections, with 284 and 272 respectively.

As of today, 2,146 COVID-19 patients are staying in hospitals (15 children included). 1,229 of them seriously ill. 33 are on invasive ventilators and 1,477 are receiving supplementary oxygen. The current bed occupancy rate reaches 52 per cent.

All countries are facing the virus surge today. And very soon some of them will be vaccinating their people against the coronavirus infection. As we know, Ukraine’s government has pre-ordered the coronavirus vaccine, but the details of how many doses have been secured and when they would be available are still unknown.

However, Kyiv is ready to start the vaccination rollouts as soon as Ukraine gets the vaccine. The municipal designated healthcare facility will start administering the Covid-19 vaccines at immunisation clinics which are staffed and equipped to provide such services to the public.

The situation in schools remains tense. The active coronavirus cases are almost 1,500 school students and 1,100 teachers. Five schools remain quarantined. Students of 1,190 classes in 289 schools study remotely.

215 kindergartens groups in 155 nursery schools are temporarily closed and ten more entire kindergartens are quarantined. The current kindergarten attendance is 46 per cent.

Let me remind that the municipality has single-handedly deployed over 4,800 coronavirus beds in the municipal coronavirus hospitals. At least, ₴31 million is committed to scale up the oxygen-supported beds and cover the expenses related to the repaired oxygen flow systems at the hospitals. Another  ₴5.5 million went to purchase oxygen concentrators. Thus, 1,523 COVID-19 beds have access to piped oxygen and 594 are equipped with oxygen concentrators.

With this aim, the national government has to infuse additionally over ₴64 million into the municipal hospitals. The municipal Healthcare Department has already received almost ₴30 million of the initial allocation.

With all that money the municipality will be able to add more oxygen inpatient beds bringing their total соunt to 3,500 by the end of the year. Thus, a total of 80 per cent of all coronavirus beds will have oxygen support.

An example of these efforts is the expanded coronavirus bed capacity at the municipal hospital No.7, which can admit now at least 140 COVID-19 patients, an addition of 110 since September. As soon as the hospital receives the pre-ordered oxygen storage tank, all those beds will have access to oxygen, compared to 13 in September. The same situation is in hospital No. 18 which has increased the number of beds by 60 to 160. 144 of them are oxygen-supported. Other municipal hospitals are also undergoing their oxygen flow system repairs.
