Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – December 4, 2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: There are 1,374 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, 26 fatalities and 310 recoveries from the infection in Kyiv. The increase brings the total number of infections to 76,750. The death toll has now reached 1,395 and the number of recoveries has risen to 24,585.

New cases are 794 women (18-92 years old), 498 men (aged 18-85) and 82 children. 13 medical professionals are also confirmed positive overnight. Hospitalised are 79 patients. 

The highest number of new infections, 219 came from Dniprovsky district. 213 new cases were reported in Solomiansky district.

The testing capacity in Kyiv is the highest in Ukraine and exceeds 430 tests per 100,000 population. Until now the municipal laboratories and health facilities have performed over 255,000 PCR tests and almost 86,000 antibody tests in Kyiv. Almost 155,000 Kyivans have tested for the infection at home so far. Private health facilities also do both PCR and antibody tests.

Unfortunately, the number of new hospitalisations remains high, reaching 1,131 today. 19 of them are children. Hospitals in Kyiv see steadily growing rates of very sick patients. Now 1,158 in-patients are very ill, 1,401 are under oxygen therapy and 31 are put on a ventilator. The current bed occupancy rate stands at about 52%.

Currently, five schools remain closed due to coronavirus infections. 1,171 classes in 287 schools across the city are learning remotely. The active COVID-19 cases are 1,397 school students and 1,060 teachers. Also, nine entire nursery schools and 203 kindergarten classes in 151 preschools are quarantined so far. Attendance rate is over 50 per cent.
