The Kyiv City Council appoints Commissioner on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The members of the Kyiv City Council have appointed Lesia Petrivska, the UDAR’s representative and a sign language interpreter to serve as the Commissioner on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

“I welcome the decision of the City Council to introduce the position of Disability Rights Commissioner. By the way, Kyiv is the first Ukrainian city where such ombudsperson will work to make our city inclusive, accessible and barrier-free. Lesia Petrivska has a vast experience in disability іssuеs and will work to reach out to disabled Kyivans,” said Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Lesia Petrivska thanked for her appointment and said that she would step down from her position of the City Council member so that she could devote all her effort to the new position. “I am ready to work 24/7 to provide equity for persons with disabilities. I am fully aware that this job is not about the politics and wаnts my tоtаl соmmіtmеnt. I will do everything possible to unite efforts of the city government, the city council and the public sector to make Kyiv more comfortable and equitable for people with special needs,” she reassured.
