Mayor Klitschko Coronavirus Upd- Feb 3, 2021

03.02.2021

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: There are new 330 coronavirus infections in Kyiv in the past 24 hours, totalling 129,164. Good news is that the number of recoveries is steadily growing. Today’s 2,370 new recoveries raise their total number to 73,515. There are 15 more fatalities, bringing the death toll to 2,392.

The latest cases are 178 women (18-89 years old), 139 men (18-89 years old) and 13 children. Also, there are nine healthcare workers among new infections. Hospitalised are 32 patients. In total, there have been over 2,080 hospitalisations since the beginning of the outbreak.

Darnytsky district leads with 73 new cases, followed by Dniprovsky district with 70 new infections.

Now coronavirus hospitals in Kyiv operate at about 26 per cent capacity. 1,035 COVID-positive patients, including 2 kids have been taken to hospitals so far. 704 patients are seriously ill, 843 patients require supplemental oxygen and 25 are on a ventilator.

Also, we see a decreasing trend of seasonal flu cases which have reached 10,674 so far, including 7,573 adults and 3,101 children. By the way, half of the kids with flu are school-age children. 773 people, including 14 children have been hospitalised with influenza. Please, pay more attention to your health and if you feel sick, call the primary care doctor rather than try self-medicating.

We have a situation in schools under control. None of the schools is fully closed. Even so, there are some classes that learn from home. There are 49 of them in 30 schools. 111 school students and 94 teachers are active coronavirus cases so far. Also, quarantined are 21 kindergarten classes in 21 kindergartens. The current kindergarten attendance rate is over 60 per cent.

Also, on my initiative, the municipality pays municipal hospitals’ staff their increased monthly bonuses. About ₴1,5 billion have been set aside for this budget spending. Now doctors from municipal hospitals earn additional ₴5,000 per month, nurses and attendants ₴4,000 and ₴2,000 respectively.

We try to support the municipal medical workers to the best of our ability, especially because as of last April the funding for their support payments is being provided by the National Health Service. Over 27,700 medical professionals from 84 municipal health facilities are among those who receive the monthly payments, including over 8,000 doctors, almost 12,000 nurses and about 7,600 attendants.

Answering a question from the media whether there is a list of those eligible who want a vaccine for the coronavirus disease, in the first place I want to underline that we do everything possible to purchase the vaccine as soon as we can. The municipality is іntеnsеlу nеgоtіаtіng a separate vaccine deal with some developers, but the vaccine is in high demand and not easily available. I am pulling all strings to have the best deal and procure the vaccine for Kyivans.

First in line for the vaccine are the elderly and the essential services employees, in particular the frontline medical professionals, municipal, emergency and social services workers as well as school staff. Currently, the healthcare centres are getting ready to roll out the vaccination and are making the priority lists of beneficiaries. At the city council meeting on February 11 we plan to allocate ₴140 million to purchase the vaccine for COVID-19.
