Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – October 2, 2020

02.10.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: The number of daily cases is still growing in Kyiv. There are 447 new cases overnight and ten more deaths. So far the death toll reaches 401.

New cases are 251 women (19-82 years old), 168 men (aged 18-83) and 28 children. 28 medical workers tested positive in the past 24 hours! 45 people were admitted to hospitals.

A total of 23,602 Kyivans have been infected with the virus so far. 7,253 of them have successfully recovered, 312 overnight.

The majority of new cases, 93 came from Dniprovsky district, followed by Desniansky district with 70 overnight cases.

Now when the new infections are climbing again worldwide, it is all the more important to take the danger seriously. Please, wear masks, wash your hands and use hand sanitisers, avoid mass gatherings! Please, talk to your children about the virus and teach them how they can prevent the infection.

We all must do everything possible to avoid the sharp virus surge because much depends on our attitude.

Unfortunately, despite the worrying trend of growing prevalence, some businesses in Kyiv still choose to arrogantly ignore the official health guidelines and endanger their staff and visitors. This is why the municipality is continuing to check the compliance of the business with sanitary requirements. Over the last week the special patrols have inspected 350 restaurants, stores and markets and issued 54 penalty notices.

I would like to urge you to pay closer attention to the compliance of shops and cafes with the safety measures and let us know about any violations.

Another hot topic is the coronavirus situation in schools. 365 school students and 205 teachers are active coronavirus cases so far in Kyiv. Four schools are closed due to infections among staff. Two schools have resumed іn-реrsоn сlаssеs. There is a slight drop in the number of students learning remotely. Currently, 275 classes in 116 schools with COVID-19 positive kids are self-isolating.

Also, two kindergartens in Desniansky district remain under quarantine. 40 nursery groups are temporarily closed due to the detected infections. Attendance rate is over 55%.

Currently, there are 11 positive coronavirus cases among staffers of the Kyivpastrans, the municipal public transport operator. Since this March 43 cases have been confirmed there. 32 people have recovered.

We all are aware that public transport rides still contribute to the higher risk of getting infected. An average of one million passengers per day uses the ground public transport in Kyiv. Today 350 buses, almost 330 trolley-buses and over 260 trams operate in Kyiv. This is why the operator maintains regular checks of the sanitary condition of the public transportation fleet. All drivers have daily routine health check-up. A driver with any signs of illness and staffers who have been in contact with him are being tested.

And finally, my congratulations to Dynamo Kyiv on getting back to the UEFA Champions League, the top football club competition! For the first time in four years we are about to see games of the most celebrated Ukraine’s club (who I am cheering for) with some of the most powerful clubs in Europe.

As you may know, due to the pandemic restrictions, home matches in Kyiv have been played behind closed doors, but yesterday the UEFA Executive Committee allowed fans back in stadiums which must be filled to 30 per cent capacity. This regulation applies to Nations League, Champions League and Europa League matches hosted by Ukraine. The national healthcare authority approved the decision.

I am looking forward to the nearest game with Germany’s team on October 10!
