Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – November 4, 2020

04.11.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: I am excited to return to my workplace. My coronavirus test result is negative and I feel good. But the virus numbers in Kyiv surge again.

Kyiv hits single-day record of coronavirus cases, with 856 new transmissions in the past 24 hours! The total number of infections has reached 40,390.

There are 43 more positive COVID-19 cases among medical workers. 17 more coronavirus deaths rise the death toll to 816. 268 patients recovered overnight, tаkіng іt up to a tоtаl of 13,421.

456 new cases are women aged 19-90 and 334 are men, 18-83 years old. 66 children were also confіrmеd роsіtіvе.

71 patients were admitted to the city’s hospitals and others are self-isolating, under medical care.

The highest number of new cases,132 comes from Dniprovsky district.

As of today, there are 2,005 coronavirus in-patients, including 34 children. 654 of them are admitted with a serious health condition, 803 patients receive supplemental oxygen and 28 are put on a ventilator. More 439 in-patients have suspected COVID-19 diagnosis.

In response to a steady increase in new coronavirus cases, Kyiv scales up the testing capacity which is already the highest in Ukraine and exceeds 450 tests per 100,000 population.

Until now the municipal laboratories and health facilities have performed over 196,000 PCR tests and over 58,000 antibody tests in Kyiv.

The mobile response brigades continue to collect samples of the people with symptoms at home. In total, they have taken almost 118,000 samples of the individuals, with over 1,160 overnight.

To reinforce the laboratory capacities the city has already bought additional laboratory equipment which will be distributed to the city hospitals No. 4 and No. 5. Also, new in-house PCR laboratories will be set up in the city hospitals No. 6 and No. 7, the municipal Health Academy and the maternity hospital No. 5, allowing to conduct as many as 2,300 additional tests per day.

The municipality has to enforce the coronavirus safety measures in the municipal public transport, in particular in the metro where riders often ignore the health precautions. From now on the Municipal Guards will not allow passengers without face masks to enter the metro. The public transport is a zone of higher virus exposure and passengers must obey the health rules.

I want to remind you about the ongoing seasonal epidemic of flu. As of now, the number of influenza cases has almost reached 10,000 in Kyiv.

If you feel unwell, you should call your family doctor. I can tell from my experience that COVID-19 is a very insidious disease with no proven medication against it. So please, pay more attention to your health and be careful so not to endanger those around you. Please, remember to wear a facial mask, use sanitisers and observe physical distance!
