Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – May 28

28.05.2021

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: The coronavirus situation in Kyiv has somewhat improved. Though new daily coronavirus cases and hospitalisations are trending downward, we cannot afford to feel relaxed because the virus is still here.

There are new 384 cases in the past 24 hours registered in Kyiv. With this, their total number has reached 205,901.

The latest patients are 218 women (aged 18-94), 148 men (18-86 years old) and 18 children. Among new cases are nine medical workers. 62 patients are admitted to the city’s hospitals with the conformed diagnosis and 87 Kyivans with suspected disease.

15 overnight fatalities bring the death toll to 5,070. There are 4,180 recoveries in the past 24 hours, taking recoveries to 161,908.

The highest number of new cases, 87 come from Sviatoshynsky district.

There are still plenty of patients who are seriously ill and the mortality rate remains high dеspіtе the dесlіnе in nеw саsеs. A total of 786 coronavirus-positive patients are being treated in hospitals. 641 in-patients are very ill, 771 are under oxygen therapy and 30 are put on an invasive ventilator. Today’s hospital bed occupancy rate reaches 15 per cent. The oxygen-supported bed occupancy rate is a bit more than 19 per cent.

Along with the rest of the regions, Kyiv continues to vассіnаte its рорulаtіоn. For this, the municipality has established 98 pop-up vaccination offices and deployed 15 coronavirus mobile vaccination teams. A total of over 113,000 people in Kyiv have received their first dose of the Covishield, CoronaVac, Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccine. Now the city begins a second-dose vaccine rollout. The priority recipients are mainly medical professionals, municipal social service and education workers, the elderly and paralympic athletes.

Additionally, on May 25 the city received another batch of 20,640 doses of CoronaVac vaccine which will be administered to the Paralympians, prosecution officers, officers of the national Technical Security and Intelligence Service, staff of sanitariums and people who have registered on the Diya platform. As soon as there are enough Pfizer vaccine shots available we are ready to deploy additionally ten mobile vaccination teams.

Tomorrow another vaccination hub will open on premises of the International Exhibition Centre. I want to say thank you to the Tkachenko brothers who own the Centre for doing their part to fight the pandemic. This is a good example of support of the socially responsible business.

The hub will operate over the weekends from 10am to 6pm and administer the CoronaVac shots to those Kyivans who have previously registered on the Diya platform.

Next week summer vacation starts in all 566 city schools that will use the summertime to make an upgrade and repairs. It is expected that at least 30,000 kids are enrolled in school for the first time this year.

Now we are putting a lot of effort to ensure the safe national high school graduation testing for all 135,000 people involved in this year’s campaign. It will be run in 183 schools where cleaning routines will be intensified. Law enforcement officers and health professionals will reinforce their presence in schools. Masks and disinfectants will be distributed among children and school staff.

17 nursery groups in 16 kindergartens are temporarily closed due to the detected infections. One kindergarten is quarantined. The attendance rate is over 52 per cent.

My congratulations to 18,500 high school students across Kyiv who celebrate their last school day today! For the second year in a row the end of the school year will be celebrated according to the public health guidelines. The Kyiv broadcaster will air a virtual celebration ceremony for this year’s graduates featuring teachers who have given online video lessons for schoolers under the School Online project.

My congratulations to this year’s graduates! May your grown-up lives be successful and kind to you! I would like to remind you of my core motto which always works for me “Have a dream, work hard. Nothing is Impossible!”

Next weekend Kyiv celebrates City Day. Traditionally these days are packed with fun and various activities but due to the restrictions, some of them will be held on a limited basis according to the safety guidance or virtually. The main locations are Spivoche Pole and Arka Druzhby Narodiv Monument.

To celebrate City Day a traditional «Chestnut Run» will take place this year. Also, we are going to unveil the renovated portion of Peyzazhna Alley, another beautiful landmark in the city centre.

A full list of activities is available on the site of the city administration.
