Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – June 3, 2020

03.06.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Let me remind that these days I am holding news briefings on the coronavirus situation three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Yesterday, on June 2 the number of new coronavirus cases rose by 28, today by 62, reaching 3133 in total. Today’s new cases are 38 women (24-95 years old), 16 men (30-83 years old) and eight children. There are also 15 more medical professionals among new infections registered since Monday. 24 patients were hospitalised.

The number of recoveries rose by 102 over the past two days, taking their total number to 756. There is one more death which brings the death toll to 69.

The city’s healthcare authority has increased PCR testing which is available at six municipal health facilities as well as privately-owned and state laboratories. Today’s testing capacity in Kyiv exceeds 60 individuals per 100,000 residents. The national health authority sets this criterion at 12 tests per 100,000 population.

A total of 184 coronavirus positive Kyivans have been hospitalised, including eight children. 40 of them are in the ICUs and three on a ventilator. 84 (10 children among them) in-patients are waiting for their screening results. The current bed occupancy rate at coronavirus dedicated hospitals does not exceed 40%.

Worryingly, the number of pneumonia in-patients is still high, 352 Kyivans so far have been admitted to hospitals with pneumonia. All patients with pneumonia diagnosis are being tested for coronavirus.

Also, frontline medics who treat or have come in contact with COVID-19 positive or suspected people are subject to the new antibody testing. 850 such tests have been carried out so far.

As you see, the virus threat is still looming and we all have to be careful now, while the city is reopening. Please, keep to the health guidelines to avoid the virus contraction in public places.

A few words about the daycare children centres. 466 kindergartens have reopened so far in Kyiv, while 62 are under repair. All facilities meet the strictest health and safety requirements. Only about 15,000 kids are back, compared with 55,000 enrolled prior to the quarantine. Many parents decided their kids will stay home for some more time.
