Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – June 26, 2020

26.06.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Today I have some bad news to share.

For the first time since the beginning of the outbreak Kyiv has passed the threshold of three-digit number of coronavirus cases registered  overnight. 115 people tested positive in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of infections to 4724. Also, one more death brings the death toll to 102. With 17 new recoveries, the number of all recovered cases reached 1490.

New cases are 58 females aged 19-85 and 49 males aged 18-78. Among infected are eight children and nine healthcare workers. 25 patients (16 children included) were admitted to the city’s hospitals.

Darnytsky district leads with 19 positive cases, followed by Dniprovsky and Obolon districts, each with 18 cases. There is a significant rise in infections among children in Kyiv. The total number of children cases stands at 377, with 139 new infections in June. Most affected are kids аgеd bеtwееn 10 and 14 years. A baby of 10 days old was the youngest patient with COVID-19 in Kyiv.

Once again I want to remind the parents and caregivers of the necessity to be careful. You are a role model for your children, so please observe the safety rules and stay responsible for your own and their health!

A cluster of five new cases emerged in Troeschyna non-food market. Currently, those people are under quarantine and the National Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection tracks down their contacts. The Kyiv Emergency Commission will decide if the market should close.

As you see, the coronavirus situation gets worse in Kyiv. We still have too many new cases every single day. We have relaxed the restrictions to lessen the pressure on business and revive the economy. Unfortunately, many Kyivans felt they could ignore the basic healthcare rules. They do not wear masks in public places, throw parties and ignore social distancing.

They act as if the virus has disappeared. Should the prevalence grows further and scale down the number of hospital beds available to coronavirus patients, we will tіghtеn the restrictions, including the public transportation service reduced. I want to stress that with every day we are getting closer to such a decision.

The municipality does everything possible to help people recover from the pandemic crisis, particular those who lost their full-time job.

Together with the Kyiv Unemployment Centre, we have introduced relief measures to support SMEs and entrepreneurs affected by the pandemic. They can apply for unemployment benefits for their employees, filing a claim to their district unemployment centre during 90 days after their being stood down. Compensation is tax-free and covers the entire period of unemployment plus 30 days after the quarantine expires. Hundreds of the Kyiv SMEs have already applied for the aid which helped save almost 7,500 jobs.
