Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – June 19, 2020

19.06.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: There are new 97 coronavirus cases in Kyiv in the past 24 hours and sadly, another death. A total of 4,176 Kyivans have been infected with COVID-19 so far. 96 people have died. 46 more patients have recovered overnight, tаkіng іt up to a tоtаl of 1332.

New cases include 49 women (20-92 years old), 37 men (19-84 years old) and six kids. Seven people were admitted to the city hospitals.

The highest number of registered infections is in Solomyansky and Obolon districts that account for 14 and 13 new cases respectively.

Currently, there are 222 COVID-19 positive and 57 suspected in-patients in Kyiv. Among them are 12 children. 47 patients remain in critical care units and three of them are on a ventilator. 420 patients are treated in hospitals with pneumonia, with 62 hospitalised overnight.

Unfortunately, there are increasingly more new coronavirus infections among school and kindergarten staff. At least one laboratory-confirmed case has been registered in five city schools over the last week.

The National Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection conducted tests of river water quality and ok’d the swimming  at 12 more beaches in Kyiv. Another 20 water recreation zones are open only for sunbathing but swimming there is forbidden. The full list of beaches is available on Pleso department web-site.

Over the last several years six city beaches have been upgraded to provide much more comfortable beach resting options. Kyiv’s beaches are increasingly more accessible for wheelchair users and people with disabilities. Eight of them offer amphibious wheelchairs and the lifeguards there are trained to handle the special needs of such people. Beach rescuers work at all certified city beaches.

This year Blue Flags have been awarded to seven more beaches in Kyiv, including Troeschyna beach. All of them are recognized internationally for meeting important international quality beach standards.

Please remember that beaches reopening tests our awareness of the infection risks because the virus is still here. You see, even at the beach we still have to practice social distance, sanitise the hands and comply with health rules.

Now a few words about the safety measures that are still in place in Kyiv.

All drivers of public transport vehicles have daily routine health check-up and temperature screening. A driver with any signs of illness leaves their working place to get a further medical examination. The intensified cleaning routines remain in place, including disinfection of the flееt several times per day.

Food and non-food market owners should ensure that the markers adhere to the reopening public health guidelines and remain safe. It is the responsibility of owners to ensure that a market complies with the mask-wearing regime, uses hand sanitisers and protective screens and encourages social distancing. The National Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection together with the police check the markets’ compliance and issue the penalty notices or close the facility.
