Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – June 15, 2020

15.06.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: There are 191 new coronavirus cases over the past weekend, with 53 overnight. This brings their total number to 3957. The number of deaths increased by 5, bringing the death toll to 90. 32 people recovered, taking total recoveries to 1164.

New cases are 92 females (age range 22-86), 82 males (aged 18-87) and 17 children. There are 11 medical professionals among new cases. Hospitalised are 42 individuals.

The majority of new cases came from Obolon and Solomyansky city districts, 28 and 20 respectively.

As I have remarked earlier, Kyiv has the highest testing capacity across Ukraine, over 85 PCR tests performed per 100,000 population. However, only 5% of them test positive.  Every coronavirus-infected person gets tested three times, once to confirm the disease and twice to determine the full recovery.

Unfortunately, more coronavirus infections occur among school and kindergarten teachers in Kyiv. There are three new cases among kindergarten staff in Obolon, Shevchenkivsky and Solomyansky districts. All three facilities have been getting ready to reopen. Now they will stay closed.

In this context, I am particularly concerned that a coronavirus positive individual may not accept the responsibility to prevent the virus spread and can be the source of infection for many others. I am speaking of the principal of School No.197 who despite being sick and having a confirmed positive test continued to go to work and interacted with plenty of people. The National Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection requested the police to initiate a criminal investigation related to this outrageous case.

Again I am urging you to stay home if you are sick, suffer from coronavirus symptoms or have a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. Please, stay away from public places, do not contact with others and self-isolate.

Answering the numerous questions about the night clubs, bars and play areas in shopping malls, I want to stress that they will  remain closed so far. Responsibility to administer their compliance and punish their owners rests with the law enforcement agencies.

As far as I know, over the weekend the police have issued 16 penalty notices to wine bars and night-life venues that breach the restriction to reopen. Breaking the rules entails a fine up to ₴340,000 and I ask the police to stop the situations of illegal working and react accordingly, otherwise we will see a virus jump!

Beaches that are being disinfected twice a day are open only for sunbathing and recreation but not for swimming until further notice. People visiting beaches must keep the social distance and regularly sanitize their hands. It is strongly recommended that those who are at higher risk of getting infected avoid going there.
