Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – June 10, 2020

10.06.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: The number of coronavirus cases rоsе bу 57 in the past 24 hours. In total, 3580 cases have been confirmed in Kyiv. Another virus-related dеаth tооk the dеаth tоll to 80. 60 more people have recovered. With this, the total number of recoveries rose to 985.

New cases are 30 women (26-78 years old), 23 men (18-72 years old), three children and even a baby less than one month old. There are also four medical workers among new cases. 12 people were admitted to hospitals.

Podil has the highest number of cases – 18, followed by 10 new cases in Desnyansky and nine cases in Dniprovsky districts.

I often see that many people act as if the threat has disappeared.

Unfortunately, Kyiv saw 15 positive coronavirus cases per 100,000 population in the past five days, which prevents us from moving to the next phase of quarantine relaxation. So, the issue of reopened restaurants, swimming pools and children’s summer camps is not something that should be addressed now.

If new cases in Kyiv exceed the benchmark of 24 per 100,000 residents, restrictions will return.

223 coronavirus patients have been hospitalised so far in Kyiv, the highest number since the beginning of the outbreak! Nine of them are children. 56 persons are in the ICU and five of them are on a ventilator. 84 in-patients including eight children are suspected COVID-19 cases. 408 people have been admitted to hospitals with pneumonia, with 63 overnight.

As you may know, as of June 1 Kyiv is reopening the kindergartens as long as they are ready to meet healthcare guidelines. 500 kindergartens have reopened so far. Almost 20,000 kids are back, compared with 55,000 enrolled before the quarantine.

Currently, the National Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection together with healthcare officials check their compliance. Thus, the kindergarten No. 668 in Solomyanksky district was told to quarantine, since they tracked a teacher assistant who has bееn іn contact with someone with the virus. She tests negative but will self-isolate anyway. Other kindergarten staff and children will also get tested.

We continue to test the staff of kindergartens for the virus. We detected a cluster of 14 infections in a kindergarten in Shevchenkivsky district and one more case on another nursery school in the same district. The facilities will further remain closed.

Let me remind that it is still unsafe to ride the public transport which accounts for 34% of all coronavirus infections in Kyiv. The police and the Municipal Guard regulate the compliance of the fleet with the mandatory health guidelines despite the form of ownership. Drivers violating the guidelines would face a fine up to ₴34,000 per person. Since May 23 there are 58 such penalty notices issued to marshrutkas’ operators. Transport staff undergoes daily health check-ups and the fleet is sanitised three times a day.

Once again I urge Kyivans to stay away from overcrowded public transportation, wear gloves and masks whenever possible. Please remember that avoiding rush hours and overcrowded buses will keep you healthy.
