Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – February 5, 2021

05.02.2021

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Over the past 24 hours, the number of infections rose by 321. In total, there are 129,827 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ukraine’s capital.

1,841 Kyivans recovered overnight, taking the total number of recoveries up to 77,813. The death toll has reached 2,414 in Kyiv, with 10 more fatalities over the past 24 hours.

New cases include 180 women (18-85 years old), 134 men (18-87 years old) and seven children. 15 more medical workers tested positive. 32 patients were admitted to hospitals.

Dnyprovsky and Desniansky districts have the highest number of cases, 80 and 75 respectively.

1,023 patients, including three children are currently being treated for the Covid-19 in the hospital. 701 patients are seriously ill, 845 are under oxygen therapy and 25 put on invasive ventilators. Today’s bed occupancy rate stands at 26 per cent in Kyiv.

The testing capacity in Kyiv is the highest in Ukraine and stands at over 255 tests per 100,000 population. Overall, since the beginning of the outbreak, the municipal healthcare authorities have carried out almost 335,000 PCR tests and over 145,000 antibody tests so far. The mobile response brigades continue to collect samples of the people with symptoms at home. A total of about 204,000 samples have been taken over the pandemic period. Tests are being run also by privately-owned health facilities.

The situation in schools is stable and under control. All schools and kindergartens in Kyiv are open for in-person learning. 65 separate classes in 41 schools and 32 groups in 29 nurseries are quarantined due to the detected infections. 115 schools students and 85 teachers are active coronavirus cases. Kindergarten attendance rate is 60 per cent.

We continue to help the most vulnerable population. Now the outdoor temperature has dropped and the municipality again sets up additional warming tents for the homeless. Warming shelters operating 24 hours a day will open near Darnytsa railway station and in the premises of Pivdenny railway station.

During extreme weather conditions only recently over 1,200 homeless people have attended those shelters. In general, there are more than 30 stationary warming shelters in Kyiv that operate from December 1 until March 31.

As you may know, four people were killed in the fire at a Covid-19 intensive care unit in Zaporizhzhia. I would like to extend my personal condolences. Kyivans sincerely sympathize the victims’ families and friends.

In this regard, I want to reassure that the Kyiv fire marshals carry out regular fire safety inspections of all 145 healthcare facilities. Special attention they pay to units equipped with high-pressure oxygen devices. All healthcare renovated facilities now have installed smoke detectors, sprinklers and water mist systems. Rescuers also conduct regular fire drills for hospital staff.
