Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – February 19, 2021

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: There are new 544 more confirmed coronavirus cases registered in Kyiv, seven fatalities and 897 recoveries from the infection over the past 24 hours.

The increase brings the total number of infections to 133,891. The death toll has now reached 2,564 and the number of recoveries has risen to 91,037.

There are 299 new infections among women (age range 18-90 years), 218 among men (18 to 83 years of age). Also, 27 kids are among the infected and 15 medical professionals. 79 patients were hospitalized.

The highest number of new infections, 111 came from Darnytsa.

Currently, 1,065 patients are being treated in hospitals with COVID-19, including two children. 676 patients remain very sick. 819 in-patients require supplemental oxygen and 27 are put on  a ventilator. The current bed occupancy rate stands at about 27 per cent.

The testing capacity in Kyiv is still the highest in Ukraine and stands at 207 tests per 100,000 population. We do everything to simplify the testing procedure. Tests are now available at 71 testing collection centres in 42 municipal-run health facilities. Those sites conduct tests at no out-of-pocket cost to Kyivans but require a doctor’s referral.

The disabled people and the elderly with symptoms, having a physician’s referral can get tested at home by the mobile response brigades.

25 coronavirus emergency medical teams are working to handle coronavirus cases. A total of 167 daytime and 142 nighttime emergency medical teams work for the Emergency Medical Service in Kyiv. Over the past two weeks, they have made 18,200 house calls, including over 1,200 to people with suspected COVID-19 diagnosis, taking 242 such patients to hospitals.

The situation in schools is stable. Currently, all facilities remain open. Students from 148 separate school classes in 97 schools are quarantined at home and learning remotely. The active COVID-19 cases are 195 school students and 110 teachers. Also, 30 kindergarten classes in 28 nursery schools are quarantined so far. The attendance rate is over 50 per cent.
