Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – December 28, 2020

28.12.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Over the past 24 hours, 851 more persons tеstеd pоsіtіvе for the coronavirus infection. With this, the total number of confirmed cases in Kyiv has risen to 108,055. Ten more Kyivans died, raising the death toll to 1,854. The number of recoveries grew to 37,461, with 188 overnight.

Among new patients are 477 women (aged 18-91 years), 332 men (18-90 years old) and 42 children. 21 medical professionals are also the latest confirmed cases.

The majority of new coronavirus cases, 305 came from Darnytsky district.

The rate of coronavirus hospital admissions is again growing. 102 patients were admitted to hospitals overnight. And as of today, there are 1,875 COVID-19 in-patients, including 12 children. 1,220 of them are very sick and 1,344 need supplemental oxygen. 30 patients are put on a ventilator. The current bed occupancy rate is more than 45 per cent.

Winter break began for all school students in Kyiv on December 25 and continues until January 11. At the beginning of the next semester, schools will continue distance learning due to the announced lockdown. This does not apply to kindergartens which operate as normal.

We have lots of online activities to help kids celebrate their holidays. A full list of fun activities among which are festive competitions, quests and fantastic workshops is available on the site of the municipal Education Department.

Also, I want to ask parents to explain the basic health and safety rules to their children. Have fun, enjoy your holidays and spend them safely!

We are entering 2021 with the balanced budget which the City Council approved last week. The budget will ensure we stay in control of the economic situation and secure the mandatory spending. The next year will also be tough. The pandemic is not over and the municipality will further work to reduce its impact and continue with plans to grow, repair road infrastructure, reconstruct kindergartens and schools, renovate hospitals and parks.

We are allocating over ₴1.6 billion to pay municipal hospitals’ staff their increased monthly bonuses. Starting from January doctors will earn additional ₴5,000 per month, nurses and attendants ₴4,000 and ₴2,000 respectively. Also, next year we are set to offer a 30 per cent pay increase to the public-sector employees and a 12 per cent pay raise to municipal services staff.

The City Council also supported my personal initiative to extend the relief measures to help rebuild SMEs affected by the pandemic. The relief package which we have introduced back in March will be extended and expanded to help save the jobs and business.
