Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – December 2, 2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: In the past 24 hours more 1,735 coronavirus cases were confirmed in Kyiv so far totalling 74,012.

New cases include 922 women (aged 18-86), 684 men (18-96 years old) and 129 children. Also, 69 healthcare workers tested positive overnight. 

Today’s 511 recoveries are the record single-day increase taking the total number of recoveries in Kyiv to 23,763. There are 16 virus-related fatalities and the death toll has now reached 1,339. 

37 new patients were admitted to hospital, others are receiving home care.

Dniprovsky district leads with 277 new infections.

Unfortunately, the number of hospitalisations remains high. A total of 2,145 patients are admitted to hospital, including 22 children. 941 in-patients are severely affected, 1,399 are under oxygen therapy and 38 are put on ventilators. The current bed occupancy rate at municipal coronavirus hospitals reaches almost 53 per cent.

Positive COVID-19 cases among the frontline healthcare workers are growing. Frontline medics are at the highest risk of getting infected and mostly, their infections are occurring at work. There are even several cases of re-infection among medical staff in Kyiv.

In total, 3,072 medical workers have been infected in Kyiv. Six of them have died, 2,587 recovered. Currently, 59 medical professionals are receiving treatment in hospitals.

Now some words about the situation in schools. 1,328 school students and 982 teachers are active coronavirus cases so far. Four schools are closed due to infections among staff. Since Monday two schools have resumed іn-реrsоn сlаssеs. 1,161 classes in 86 schools with COVID-19 positive kids are self-isolating. Also, seven kindergartens remain under quarantine. 191 nursery groups in 146 kindergartens are temporarily closed due to the detected infections. The attendance rate is over 51%.
