Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – December 11, 2020

11.12.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: 1,880 new infections were laboratory confirmed in Kyiv in the past 24 hours. With this, the total number of positive cases has risen to 88,317.

The latest cases are 1,006 women (aged 18-88), 735 men (18-88 years old) and 137 children.  Among new cases are also 61 medical professionals. 104 people were admitted to hospitals.

There are 922 new recoveries overnight, the hіghеst dаіlу rіsе in recoveries in Kyiv. 27,769 Kyivans have recovered since the start of the outbreak in Kyiv. 26 people died to bring the death toll to 1,551.

The majority of cases, 494 came from Darnytsa.

The hospitalisations remain high, now 1,915 patients are being treated in hospitals (11 children included). 1,248 of them are in serious health condition. 1,402 patients receive supplemental oxygen, 22 are put on a ventilator. The current bed occupancy rate sits at almost 48 per cent.

The active cases among school students have dropped to 1,245. The number of infected teachers remains the same, 1,000. Three schools remain closed due to coronavirus infections. 836 classes in 250 schools are learning back to remotely.

Also, four kindergartens as well as 167 kindergarten groups in 130 nurseries are quarantined so far. Attendance is about 51%.

It is our priority to save the health and lives of people. We are also saving the economy from collapse and supporting the business affected by the crisis. Next year the municipality will continue to provide relief assistance to business in Kyiv. I have initiated the extension of relief measures and also some new solutions aiming to help the SMEs save jobs.

In particular, my initiative suggests cutting permit fees for street trading kiosks, portable coffee shops and makeshift shops to ₴1. The municipality plans also to halve a fee on urban beautification for such enterprises. Also, rent on municipal properties will further remain reduced by half.

We are aware that next year we will face the revenue shortfalls, but we have to help the businesses keep alive, keep people in their jobs having their income sources.

These days I am often asked about the school resumption after the winter holidays.  The dates of winter vacation for Kyiv school students are December 25-January 11. After the break children will be back to remote learning. The municipal Education Department has already created an online curriculum and the public TV channel will resume to broadcast lectures. Winter break for community colleges will begin later, on December 31 and will last until January 15. Since January 18 they will start their next semester also remotely. If the community colleges are not allowed to resume classes after January 24, they will continue distance learning. The kindergartens will operate as normal.
