Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – August 21, 2020

21.08.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Ukraine’s capital remains in the yellow epidemiological zone. The Kyiv Emergency Commission quickly responds to the coronavirus situation to step up the municipality’s efforts.

There are 156 new COVID-19 cases overnight. With this, the total number of infections in Kyiv has reached 11,328. The latest cases are 93 women (21 – 79 years old), 55 men (20-84 years old) and eight children. Also, six more medical workers were tested positive.

23 patients were admitted to the city’s hospitals.

There are also 21 new recoveries in Kyiv, reaching 3,606 so far.

Solomiansky district is the most affected among all Kyiv’s neighbourhoods, with 26 transmissions overnight.

Worryingly, the number of hospital admissions is steadily growing. Currently, there are 499 COVID-positive in-patients, including 19 children. 51 Kyivans are admitted to hospitals with suspected coronavirus diagnosis. 92 of them are seriously ill, eight patients require invasive ventilation. In the past 24 hours 99 people were hospitalised with pneumonia. In fact, the first wave health facilities are fully converted today into coronavirus hospitals. The second wave municipal hospitals are ready to new hospital admissions, they have stockpiled the equipment and medications.

I want everyone to remember that our own attitude determines virus prevalence. The further development of the situation depends on our readiness to obey the health recommendations. This is true not only for Ukraine but also for other countries. From now on those basic safety rules and personal hygiene habits must become a daily routine. Washing hands with soap and sanitising them, wearing a facial mask and observing a physical distance are simple rules but they protect us and save our health.
