Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – April 3, 2020

03.04.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: 28 more confirmed coronavirus cases have been reported in the past 24 hours. And 2 more virus-related deaths, both women aged 56 and 69 years.

The number of total COVID-19 cases in Kyiv is 189, the death toll rose to 3. There are 17 infected men (16 to 70 years of age) and 11 women (age range 17-69 years). As you see, 2 mіnоrs are among the infected, 16-year old boy and 17-year old girl. 13 patients were hospitalized, others are self-isolating.

I want to stress, that we are doing everything possible to curb the spread of coronavirus. But the virus is rapidly advancing. Please, take this seriously! We must contain its spread together. You may help complying with regulations.

The municipal COVID-19 Response Monitoring Centre has already made some 500 phone calls to inquire after people who are self-isolating right now. If you are sick or at risk of becoming infected or hаvе bееn аrоund sоmеоnе with COVID-19, you will be definitely contacted by the Centre.

Please, prepare for the conversation ahead of time and try to recall all your movements. As you understand, it is very important to reveal your contacts or whereabouts over the past two weeks. The obtained information will help ensure that all suspicious cases are detected and quarantined. Please note that everything you tell the Centre’s staff will remain confidential and any collected personal data will be protected.

The virus is highly contagious, so health and even the lives of many people depend on your readiness to cooperate, your accuracy and fairness.

Commenting on a ‘leak’ of suspected COVID-19 patients on  social media, I want to emphasize that this is not the first time during the outbreak that the city faces such false information campaigns. Their aim is to cause panic, hysteria and unrest. The cybercrime police are already investigating the ‘leak’. Please, trust only the official sources of information!

Easter is coming soon. As mayor, I am seriously concerned about the consequences of celebrations amid the coronavirus outbreak. I urge all Christian confessions to follow the restrictions and respect a ban on mass gatherings. Church services can be held online.

Easter is a great and important holiday, with special church services, large gatherings and other traditional activities. But this time we all have to follow the restrictions, which will continue also during the celebrations.

Let me say it once more time: such strict measures are absolutely necessary to stop the virus from spreading and fight it. I know, it is a hard time for all of us, we are tired and anxious and restless. But we have no other option than to get through it together, staying well and alive. Let us celebrate Easter at home, with your own family.

As I said, all patients with pneumonia diagnosis are now being tested for coronavirus. Currently, there are almost 400 such individuals and all of them are being tested for the virus. But, according to physicians, not all people with pneumonia are coronavirus positive. This is a very widespread disease, with about 450 million cases reported every year globally. About four million people die from it every year.

So please, take it seriously and call your doctor if you have any symptoms of pneumonia – always, not only during the coronavirus pandemic. And I have to keep reminding, please, stay home for your own sake!
