Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – April 16

16.04.2021

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Unfortunately, new daily coronavirus cases, deaths and hospital admissions in Kyiv are not trending downward.

There are new confirmed 1,609 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the overall number of cases to 183,300. There are 49 more Covid-related, bringing the death toll to 4,121.

New cases include 926 women (18-91 years old), 621 men (18-92 years old) and 62 children. Infected are also 44 medical professionals. There are 156 new coronavirus  positive hospitalisations and 371 admissions with suspected diagnosis.

A total of 114,396 people have recovered so far, with 1,156 new recoveries overnight.

Darnytsky district leads, with 320 new infections.

We see no significant improvement in Covid-19 hospitalisations and hospitals remain overstretched. Currently, 4,079 patients are admitted to hospitals in Kyiv, including 19 children. 3,020 in-patients are very ill, 55 of them are on a ventilator and 3,577 more under oxygen therapy. The bed occupancy rate stands at almost 68 per cent.

The mortality rate is not falling in Kyiv. Over five last days 231 people have died of Covid-19. Also, many patients develop severe medical complications after recovery. Most common are heart failure, heart attack and stroke, fatigue, breathing problems, diabetes, thyroid disorders, renal failure and pancreatic damage. Now, with new virus variants, the recovery process takes much more time and is not so straightforward.

We are doing everything we can to stop the spread of the virus and much depends on public attitude toward compliance with lockdown rules.

Severe restrictions imposed in Kyiv have brought only small improvements and the situation remains tough. And it is too early to say about any reopening after April 30. Anyway, we will continue to closely monitor coronavirus numbers and bed occupancy rate to be ready to respond accordingly. Any decisions about prospects of reopening or extra restrictions are taken by the Kyiv Emergency Commission consisting of various industry experts including epidemiologists.

Since Easter is coming, we are already preparing additional public health measures to avoid a surge in new cases. Soon we will share details.
