Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – April 14

14.04.2021

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Unfortunately, coronavirus numbers, virus-related deaths and hospitalisations remain high.

Confirmed cases rose to 180,066 with 1457 new cases in the past 24 hours. 713 new recoveries raised their total number to 112,534. There are 47 new fatalities, bringing the death toll to 4,021.

The latest cases are 825 women (18-95 years old), 562 men (18-92 years old) and 70 children. Also, there are 22 healthcare workers among new infections.

There is a significant single-day increase in the number of hospital admissions with confirmed illness. 225 positive Covid-19 patients were hospitalised in the past 24 hours, as well as 311 with suspected diagnosis.

Currently, coronavirus hospitals in Kyiv operate at 71 per cent capacity. There are 4,261 in-patients. 3,173 of them are seriously ill, 3,728 patients require oxygen therapy and 65 invasive ventilation.

Darnitskiy district leads with 311 new cases.

As I have said before, these days we are seeing more and more children with severe Covid-19. More of them require supplemental oxygen. For example, yesterday I inspected the Kyiv children’s infectious disease hospital, which has had over 300 in-patient admissions since the beginning of this year. Now 41 children are currently being treated there, five of them need supplemental oxygen and one kid remains in the intensive therapy unit. Two in-patients are 1.5-month-old babies. During the first wave of the pandemic, Covid-19 has been highest among teenagers. Those admitted now are much younger, mostly preschoolers.

Health professionals say, the placed restrictions are showing some signs of success, but the situation is still difficult.

This is why I want to appeal to all Kyivans to follow the public health recommendations and take care of the children. Тeach them some health tips and to observe the safety rules. While schools are shut, kids cannot visit public places or gather in big companies. Also, please don’t take children to playgrounds!

Since the coronavirus situation has not significantly improved, today the Kyiv Emergency Commission has decided to keep the restrictions in place in Kyiv until April 30.

We have no other choice but to keep them on to avoid the collapse of public healthcare and prevent massive Covid-19  deaths.

Schools and kindergartens and street food markets will remain closed. Public transport, including Metro will be restricted to only essential workers (medical professionals, municipal, emergency and social services workers, and the military personnel) with special permits. Restaurants and cafes will continue to work only for takeout. We urge businesses to continue working from home. A full list of restrictions is available of the site of the city government https://kyivcity.gov.ua.

We cannot afford the carelessness now! We all must stay responsible and follow lockdown rules. We must do our part in helping the medics to flatten the curve.
