Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – October 5, 2020

05.10.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: 286 people tested positive in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of infections to 24,736. Ten more overnight fatalities rаіsеd the dеаth tоll to 430 (183 women and 247 men).

I am pleased to say, that the daily recoveries exceed the number of new coronavirus cases. A total of 8,263 Kyivans have recovered from the infection, 399 of them in the past 24 hours.

The latest cases are 163 women (18-90 years old), 99 men (19-90 years old) and 24 kids. There are 12 more confirmed cases among medical staff. 32 patients were admitted to the city hospitals.

Obolon and Dniprovsky district are the most affected Kyiv’s neighbourhoods, with 54 and 52 more overnight transmissions respectively.

Unfortunately, the death rate remains high. The сoronavirus death statistics in Kyiv shows that people aged 65 and over are at greater risk of death than the younger population. There are 294 such victims among all virus-related deaths registered in Kyiv in total over the whole pandemic period. Average age of COVID-19 victim in Kyiv is 68 years. Also, there are 103 fatalities among Kyivans aged between 50-64 years and 30 among those at age 30-49 years.

The oldest patient who has died from the coronavirus infection is a man aged 96 and the youngest is a 25-year-old woman. The majority of fatalities in Kyiv are people with various pre-existing health problems.

Currently, three schools in Kyiv are closed due to the positive cases among teachers. One facility has reopened after the quarantine.

331 classes in 130 schools across the city are in self-isolation due to virus transmissions among students. This is a sharp rise since the past week. 375 school students and 259 teachers (54 more compared to the last Friday) are active coronavirus cases so far.

Also, two kindergartens in Desniansky district and 41 groups in 36 kindergartens across the city are in quarantine and temporarily closed. The current kindergarten attendance rate is over 53%.

As you may know, the Kyiv Emergency Commission has approved a decision which had been eagerly awaited by both football players and fans. It allows fans back in stadiums which must be filled to 30 per cent capacity. The decision refers only the following international matches: a game of the qualifying round of the European Championship between the national youth teams of Ukraine and Romania (hosted by Obolon stadium on October 9); the UEFA Nations League match between the national teams of Ukraine and Germany (hosted by Olympiysky stadium on October 10) and the UEFA Nations League match between the national teams of Ukraine and Spain (the same venue on October 13). While attending the stadiums please make sure you follow the health and safety measures.
