Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – October 22, 2020

22.10.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Worryingly, Kyiv has the highest single-day increase in the number of new cases, with 631 infections overnight. With this, their total number has risen to 32,500. New cases are 341 women (aged 18-85), 253 men (18-84 years old) and 37 children. 46 new patients are hospitalised.

15 Kyivans died from coronavirus, taking the death toll in Kyiv to 642. In total,11,304 patients have recovered, with 189 in the past 24 hours.

Desniansky, Solomiansky and Obolonsky districts report the highest number of new infections, 96, 95 and 94 respectively.

Kyiv has the highest testing capacity in the country, almost 246 tests per 100,000 population.

Since the start of the pandemic, the municipal laboratories have conducted over 175,000 PCR tests and about 55,000 antibody tests. In total, about 106,000 Kyivans have tested for the infection at home, with 1,646 overnight.

We are putting a lot of effort to ensure the safe, secure and credible local election. As I have said, we have bought and distributed the disinfectants and PPE among all voting stations.  Law enforcement officers and the Municipal Guards will reinforce their presence at the polls to maintain order and prevent civil unrest.

Recently the police officers have conducted scenario-based training aimed at improving their performance on Election Day and during vote counting and tabulation.

We all hope that elections will be held in full compliance with the law and public health guidance.

Finally a few words about public events that may be held before or after the elections.

Let me remind that since the start of the outbreak in Kyiv the responsibility to administer the compliance with the official healthcare recommendation rests with the national police. For its part, the local government has established special patrols consisting of the municipal officials, police officers, municipal guards and officials of the National Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection who conduct spot-checks at food facilities, stores and night clubs. Over this month they have conducted over 778 checks and issued 130 penalty notices.

Also, I would advise you against attending rallies and public events because they pose a real threat amid the coronavirus pandemic and cause a surge in coronavirus cases.
