The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.
Klitschko: I am sharing an update on the coronavirus situation in Kyiv.
Unfortunately, it is getting worse. We have the second-highest number of single-day cases, 319, taking the positive cases to 14, 477 in total.
New cases are 158 women (18-85 years old), 142 men (aged 19-81) and 19 children. Also, further 17 medical workers tested positive overnight. Hospitalised are 59 patients.
63 Kyivans recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 4,616. Eight more fatalities raised the death toll to 230, and unfortunately, we are seeing no drop in their daily number.
Darnytsky and Dniprovsky districts are again the most affected among all Kyiv’s neighbourhoods, with 48 new transmissions overnight.
Alarmingly, the rate of COVID-19 infection among healthcare workers is rising over the past two weeks and the majority of cases are occupational transmissions. Overall, since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak 948 medics have tested positive. 772 of them recovered. Currently, 33 medical workers are hospitalised.
Another hot topic is the school reopening. I want to underline, that the municipal authority does everything possible to prevent new spikes in schools and kindergartens. All municipal education facilities have received enough sanitisers, masks, gloves, and cleaning supplies. Additional ₴10 million оn tор of the ₴30 million аlrеаdу bеіng аllосаtеd hаvе bееn contributed to provide hygiene supplies and disinfectants to schools.
All schools follow strict healthcare recommendations. They conduct the morning temperature screening, sanitise and air classes.
A few days after reopening already two schools are back to remote learning due to the new cases among their staff. Overall, 20 classes in 11 schools across the city are placed under quarantine due to COVID-19 active cases among students. Also, four kindergartens are quarantined and closed in Desnyansky, Pechersky, Dniprovsky and Obolonsky city districts.
I want to urge all parents to pay closer attention to your children and let the sick students stay home.
