Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – June 24, 2020

24.06.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Today’s coronavirus statistics looks not very optimistic. The number of new cases in Kyiv has risen to 4528, with new 99 cases overnight. Five of them are medics. 25 more people recovered overnight, taking the total recoveries to 1440.

Newly infected are 60 women, aged 22-70 and 31 men, aged 19-74 and eight children.

14 patients were admitted to the hospitals. In total, there are 232 coronavirus in-patients, including nine children and 33 people with the suspected diagnosis. 51 people are in the Intensive Care Units so far and one on a ventilator. There are also new 36 pneumonia cases overnight that bring their total number to 432.

A few words about the bed occupancy rate at coronavirus dedicated hospitals. This criterion stands at 57% in Oleksandrivska hospital, 33% in the municipal hospital No. 4, 75% and 33% in the hospital No. 9 and the Kyiv Infectious Disease Children’s Hospital respectively.

As you may know, the national government allowed the cities to move to the next phase of loosening the restrictions. With this in mind, Kyiv reopens restaurants and cafes (children’s play areas remain still closed), swimming pools for individual swims, art activities and cultural events of up to ten people as well theatres and cinemas with the limited number of visitors who must observe social distancing. The Kyiv Emergency Commission issued safety guidelines for the reopened businesses and will control their compliance.

We all must understand that if the coronavirus situation gets worse, we will have to tighten the restrictions back. This is why it is very important to keep wearing a facial mask in public places, continue to sanitise your hands and practise social distance.
