Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – June 1, 2020

01.06.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Life in Kyiv is cautiously returning to normal. More and more people are back to work. Since the city has functioned even during the pandemic, I will further inspect the progress on various construction projects.

From now on I will hold my online briefings on the coronavirus situation and Kyiv’s response three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Here are the latest developments.

Over the weekend, the number of infections has risen by 194 in Kyiv. 115 females, 163 males and 16 children were proved positive. Among the new cases are 29 medical workers. There are, sadly, three more deaths. 33 patients were admitted to the city’s hospitals. Others are at home, under medical care. 57 Kyivans recovered.

In total there are 3043 laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases in Kyiv. There are 654 recoveries so far. 68 people have died from coronavirus.

The majority of new coronavirus cases came from Dniprovsky and Podolsky districts, 25 and 23 respectively. 22 new infections at Podil have been linked to Frolovsky Convent, a new coronavirus hot spot with the number of confirmed cases totalling 26. Currently, four nuns are in hospitals. The convent has been put under quarantine.

I am saying it once again, stop being careless! Should there be new spikes of the disease, we will have to tighten the restrictions again.

The municipality is fully aware how hard SMEs and all residents have been hit by the pandemic. Now, when restrictions on business and public places are being partially lifted and people are back to work, we have to keep the situation under control and everyone must play a part in it.

As you know, the city parks have reopened to the public. And we continue with our efforts to provide more well maintained green areas. All refurbished parks have now new landscapes, seating areas, LED lighting and irrigation systems, public restrooms, sports and playgrounds.

Each upgraded park has its own distinctive features. For instance, Sovky park now features a dry fountain with light effects, a green maze and fixed chess boards. Syrets park will soon have a dance ground and an interactive fountain for kids. New improvements in Partyzanskoy Slavy park include an arched fountain with water and light effects and equipped with special sensors.

Troeschyna park has been established around a series of ponds. As for Lebedyne fitness park, this recreation place began as a neglected weedy area. We cleared and landscaped the site, constructed cycling, walking trails, some pitches and sports grounds.

Now a few words about the situation with illegal parking. Parking locations are available on the Kyivtransparkservice website. Despite the increased number of parking lots, particularly in the city centre, the parking inspection service issues increasingly more parking tickets.

Only over April it has issued some 4,000 penalty notices to people parking illegally which brought in over ₴2 million. Please mind that parking inspectors do not accept payments by cash.
