The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.
Klitschko: Unfortunately, since there are peaks and valleys in the coronavirus numbers reported, we cannot speak of any flattening the curve in Kyiv.
Over the weekend, the number of infections has risen by 255, with 59 overnight. In total there are 5,602 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Kyiv.
126 females, 112 males and 17 children were proved positive over the past weekend. Among the new cases are 15 medical workers. 39 patients were admitted to the city’s hospitals.
76 Kyivans recovered taking the total number of recoveries up to 1,809. There are, sadly, four more deaths bringing the death toll to 116.
The majority of new coronavirus cases came from Dniprovsky district.
Worryingly, the number of intensive care patients is growing. There are 25 ICU patients in Kyiv, four of them are on a ventilator. 47 more in-patients are very ill, in serious medical condition.
Currently, the number of confirmed coronavirus hospitalisations in Kyiv totals 279, including 12 children. 44, four children included were admitted to hospitals with suspected diagnosis and 439 with pneumonia.
Let me remind that the first wave health facilities with 900 bed capacity in total (eight hospitals and two maternity clinics) are 39% full. In case of a surge, we are ready to add more 800 beds in seven second wave municipal hospitals.
I am never getting tired of urging to be careful and observe the basic health precautions. The threat is looming and the disease is still very dangerous.
The municipality does everything to protect Kyivans. Please, help us and do your own part! The rules are simple, but they can your health and even life. Do remember this!
Based on the decision of Ukraine’s Healthcare Ministry, the Kyiv Emergency Commission has removed today a limitation of the night working hours for restaurants and cafes, cinemas and theatres if they are ready to comply with sanitary rules. Any other entertainment facilities still work until 10 p.m. and any public events must end by 10 p.m.
The city is continuing with compliance checks. Last month a special commission consisting of the law enforcement officers and officials of the National Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection issued 369 penalty notices, almost all of them at food facilities. What concerns is that those who sell, make and serve food started to ignore the official health recommendation. This can lead to a virus spike and consequently, new tougher restrictions.
As you may know, according to the resolution of the Kyiv Emergency Commission, owners of consumer services, retail networks as well as restaurants and cafes are required to routinely test their employees with COVID-19 antibody tests. The testing indicates that a person with antibodies has or has had the coronavirus infection and should be performed at least once a month. To prevent new clusters emerge at food facilities where staffers are often in contact with possible COVID-19 positive customers, all those front line workers must be subject to the antibody testing.
A ₴300 test is available at 12 healthcare facilities and we are looking into the possibility of their expanding. As expected, the testing will relieve a load on diagnostic facilities and contribute to broader detection of the infection. But still, a PCR test is absolutely necessary to confirm the coronavirus diagnosis.
