Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – July 10, 2020

10.07.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: Again, there is an overnight increase in coronavirus numbers in Kyiv. Over the past 24 hours 118 persons tеstеd pоsіtіvе for COVID-19. Among them are 61 women (age range 19-93 years), 48 men (18-84 years old) and nine children. Four more medical workers got infected. 17 people were hospitalized.

As of today, the total number of coronavirus cases in Kyiv is 5,990. There are 2,033 recoveries from the infection, with 71 in the past 24 hours.

Dniprovsky district leads, with 24 new cases.

Many children are still affected by the virus. Since the beginning of the outbreak, 464 kids, mostly aged 5-14 years  have been tested positive, with 183 over the last month. 21 of them are now at Kyiv hospitals.

The main reason for this is their parents’ recklessness. Please, explain and control how your children observe the rules of hygiene. Please, be careful and keep your kids away from big gatherings or playing with other kids.

Let me remind about the ongoing checks of the compliance of restaurants, shopping malls and markets with sanitary requirements. Often information on the violations comes from Kyivans. Over the last few days the special patrols inspected over 430 such facilities and issued 107 penalty notices. It means every fourth city facility violates the health guidelines! And then people are wondering where such high coronavirus numbers in Kyiv come from. Four night-clubs were forced to close due to a refusal to respect working hours.

Currently, there are enough medical workers to treat all coronavirus positive patients, including 200 doctors and 66 infectologists. Since March, the city has spent ₴106 million for tests and medication and ₴57 million on medical equipment. Last month we allocated extra ₴65 million for protective gear and tests intended for medical staff. Now all facilities designed to treat the coronavirus patients have at least a month-supply of medications and protective equipment. If needed, we will buy all necessary to change our response.

It is not my intention to scare anybody but the prevalence is high and tight restrictions can return. I understand that all have quarantine fatigue and want to be set free. Life goes on. People want to travel and enjoy the summer. But the sooner we stop the virus spread, the sooner we begin with our normal life. Restrictions are not so tight now and bearable, but this does not mean we can afford to neglect our safety.
