Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – October 7, 2020

07.10.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: The total number of infected people has risen to 25,474 in Kyiv, with 383 more cases over the past 24 hours. New cases include 212 women (aged 18-94), 144 men (19-87 years old) and 27 children. Also, among the infected are 15 healthcare workers.

There are 349 more recoveries, raising their total number to 8,894, and six more deaths. The current death toll in Kyiv stands at 442.

Desniansky city district has the highest infection rate, with 71 new cases.

The number of coronavirus hospitalisations grew to 1,587, by 72 overnight. 322 people are in the ICUs and 31 are on invasive ventilators. 125 patients were admitted to hospitals with the suspected diagnosis and 576 with pneumonia.

Kyiv continues to increase the testing capacity which stands now at 341 tests conducted per every 100,000 people. Let me emphasize that this is the highest testing amount across Ukraine. The Kyiv Central Laboratory and the municipal health facilities have performed over 143,000 PCR and over 25,000 antibody tests since the beginning of the outbreak. About 90,000 Kyivans have tested for the infection at home, with 1,164 overnight.

Unfortunately, we are seeing a negative trend for the rising rate of infections among school staffers and students. As of today, three schools are temporarily closed due to positive cases among teachers. Also, students from a total of 377 classes in 151 schools are staying in self-isolation. Currently, 410 school students and 302 teachers are active COVID-19 cases.

Infections among younger kids and kindergarten staff are also rising. 47 kindergarten classes across the city and three pre-schools are temporarily closed for quarantine. The current kindergarten attendance is over 58%.

Answering questions about how funds are distributed among the COVID-19 hospitals, I would like to remind you that the funding for medications and supplies as well as danger bonuses for medical workers are being provided by the National Health Service. Additionally, the municipality has spent ₴106 million to purchase medications for municipal hospitals.
