Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – November 18, 2020

18.11.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: I am sharing an update on the coronavirus situation in Kyiv and the measures we are taking to respond to it.

Unfortunately, new infections keep climbing fast. Positive coronavirus cases rose to 53,855 in Kyiv, with 1,213 new transmissions overnight. Deaths increased by 23, to 1,013 in total. 430 people recovered, taking it up to a total of 19,556.

673 women (18-94 years old), 451 men (aged 18-89) and 89 children were proved positive over the past 24 hours. New infections also include 39 medical workers. 94 patients were admitted to hospitals.

The majority of new coronavirus cases,1609 came from Shevchenkivsky district, followed by Podil with 160 overnight transmissions.

The number of coronavirus hospital admissions also continues to rise. Currently, there are 1,961 coronavirus in-patients in Kyiv, including 32 children. 723 of them are very ill, 31 are on ventilators and 1,002 under oxygen therapy.

As I have said, the municipality has expanded the bed capacity of the dedicated health facilities to 4,500 COVID-19 beds, 52% of which are currently occupied.

Kyiv also continues to increase the testing capacity which stands now at 395 tests conducted per every 100,000 people. This is the highest testing amount across Ukraine. The tests are being run by municipal, privately-owned and state health facilities.

The municipal hospitals and laboratories have performed over 206,000 PCR and about 74,000 antibody tests since the beginning of the outbreak.  About 1,628 Kyivans tested for the infection at home overnight.

Unfortunately, the epidemic situation in schools gets worse. Seven schools remain closed due to the quarantine. Students of 854 classes in 256 schools study remotely.

The active coronavirus cases among school students exceed 950 and 670 among teachers.

158 kindergartens groups in 121 kindergartens are temporarily closed. Six entire kindergartens are placed under quarantine, an increase of four since this Monday. The current kindergarten attendance is 51%.

This is why I urge all parents to explain those basic health rules to their children, monitor their health and visit the doctor if they are sick. Also, please let the sick students stay home.

Please, be careful and follow the basic hygiene measures which can help you stay safe. The virus is very aggressive, so it is better to prevent the coronavirus disease rather than cure it.
