Kyiv Mayor’s Coronavirus Update – November 25, 2020

25.11.2020

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko held a briefing providing an update on the coronavirus situation in Ukraine’s capital and the measures the city is taking to respond.

Klitschko: The total number of infected people in Kyiv rose to 62,620, with 980 more cases over the past 24 hours. New cases are 509 women (aged 18-89 years), 316 men (aged 18-89 years) and 155 children. There are 53 more confirmed cases among medical staff. 70 people were admitted to the city hospitals.

346 patients recovered overnight, tаkіng іt up to a tоtаl of 21,437. There are 23 new coronavirus deaths in Kyiv in the past 24 hours raising the death toll to 1,196.

Desniansky district has the highest number of cases, 217.

A total of 2,113 patients including 27 children are taken to hospitals with confirmed coronavirus diagnosis. 856 patients are very ill, 1,123 are under oxygen therapy and 30 put on invasive ventilators.

Due to the growing number of seriously ill coronavirus patients who require hospitalisation the ambulances are facing the increased workload and pressure. A total of 158 daytime and 136 nighttime emergency medical teams work for the Emergency Medical Service in Kyiv, a total of 1,500 paramedics.

15 coronavirus emergency medical teams are working 24 hours to handle coronavirus cases and five more are visiting patients affected by COVID-19 during daytime hours. Since the early November the coronavirus first responders have made over 35,000 house calls, including over 6,000 to people with suspected COVID-19 diagnosis. They took almost 5,000 such patients to hospitals.

This is why I would like to ask drivers to give way to an ambulance with flashing emergency lights. Please, help it reach a hospital faster because it can save someone’s life.

Now an update on the situation in schools. Currently, five of them are quarantined.  1,041 classes in 268 schools across the city are continuing to learn remotely. 1,277 school students and over 850 teachers are active coronavirus cases so far.

Also, seven entire kindergartens, 192 groups in 147 kindergartens are under quarantine and temporarily closed. The current kindergarten attendance rate is over 51 per cent.

The Kyiv government single-handedly has deployed almost 4,500 coronavirus beds in the municipal hospitals. 1,158 of them have access to piped oxygen and 481 are equipped with  oxygen concentrators. Almost ₴31 million is committed to cover the expenses related to the repaired oxygen flow systems at the hospitals and ₴5.5 million to purchase oxygen concentrators. Additionally, the national government has to infuse ₴64.3 million into the municipal hospitals to repair their oxygen flow systems and buy more concentrators. Half of that money has already come.

With all those allocations the municipality will be able to add more oxygen inpatient beds bringing their total соunt to 3,500 by the end of the year. Thus, a total of 80 per cent of all coronavirus beds will have oxygen support.
